REVIEW – EMILY WILDE'S ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF FAERIES

Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries, by Heather Fawcett, is a charming fantasy novel that blends academic rigor with the enchantment of folklore. The story follows Emily Wilde, a brilliant Cambridge professor and the world's leading expert on faeries, who travels to the remote village of Hrafnsvik to complete the first-ever encyclopaedia dedicated to these mysterious beings.

One of the novel's greatest strengths is its protagonist. Emily breaks away from the stereotype of the traditional fantasy heroine: she is exceptionally intelligent, methodical, and deeply passionate about knowledge, yet she struggles with social interactions. Her reserved personality makes her both relatable and compelling, allowing readers to follow her growth not only as a scholar but also as a person.

Another highlight is the dynamic between Emily and Wendell Bambleby, her charismatic academic rival. While Emily embodies logic and discipline, Wendell is charming, witty, and delightfully unpredictable. Their interactions provide humor, tension, and a slow-building connection that enriches the story without overshadowing the main plot.

The world-building is one of the novel's strongest features. Drawing inspiration from European folklore, Heather Fawcett presents faeries that are far removed from the gentle, magical creatures often found in children's stories. They are beautiful yet dangerous, mysterious, and bound by their own ancient rules, creating an atmosphere that is both captivating and unsettling. The journal-style narrative also adds originality, making readers feel as though they are participating in Emily's field research and discoveries.

Although the pacing can be slow at times, particularly because of the detailed descriptions of Emily's research and the local traditions, the story remains engaging thanks to the mysteries surrounding the Hidden Ones and the growing intrigue about Wendell's true identity.

Overall, Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries is a highly recommended read for fans of fantasy, folklore, and slow-burn romance. With memorable characters, rich world-building, and elegant prose, Heather Fawcett delivers an intelligent and enchanting adventure that reminds readers that the greatest mysteries are not always found in magical creatures, but also in learning to understand others—and oneself.
